This holiday season we are collectively brightening the lives for young adults with histories of abuse, neglect and time spent in foster care.
What: Realities for Children Boulder County Nightlights Holiday Fundraiser
When: Saturday, December 7th from 4:00PM-6:00PM
Where: Valley Subaru of Longmont – 1800 Industrial Circle, Longmont
Realities for Children Boulder County hosts a Night Lights campaign during the holiday season to brighten the lives of abused and neglected young adults throughout Bolder County. Our Night Lights event features selfies with Santa, holiday treats, carolers, and more. This is a family-friendly event – the more the merrier!
Realities for Children Boulder County directly serves approximately 50 young people a year through scholarships, independent-transitional housing, emergency funding, and through its collaborative support of community partners and affiliate agencies. This final fundraiser event will help fund our programming efforts for 2020 where we hope to double the amount of young people served.
Here is a summary of the services we provide:
Emergency Funding: Realities for Children Boulder County safety net is distributed on a case-by-case basis when government grants and all other local resources are exhausted. This activity is conducted on a year round basis by the Executive Director in response to urgent requests for services. The National Foster Youth Institute states that in 2015 the country failed to reunite more than 20,000 young people with their families or place them in permanent homes. Offering financial assistance to young people who have no one to turn to lessens the burden of government agencies and helps to combat delinquency by providing necessities in a timely manner.
Educational Scholarship Support: Realities for Children Boulder County provides academic scholarships for young people who have experienced any amount of time in foster care in Boulder County. RFCBC acknowledges and encourages academic success from high school and on to college or vocational training programs. Bright Future awards are given to young people in high school who demonstrate resilience and academic commitment; recipients are recognized and encouraged to continue on their path with acknowledgement at our Hero Awards Luncheon and by receiving a laptop computer. The Triumph and Perseverance Scholarship Awards are awarded to accredited institutions to provide an avenue for academic attainment and vocational sustainability. Similarly, our Be Bright Scholarship Awards are a four year commitment to the University of Colorado Boulder in the amount of $20,000.
Polaris House: Realities for Children Boulder County has an independent housing program located in North Boulder for young adults in transition. With a live-in house manager, Polaris House can home up 4 former foster youth and/or homeless youth for 12-24 months. Residents are required to follow house rules, attend monthly house meetings, and be in school and/or work full-time. Residents are responsible for paying low-cost rent and housing-related bills and receive half of their rent payments back when they transition out. This housing opportunity plays a critical role when recognizing that the majority of youth who age out of care will experience homelessness at least one time. Polaris House has provided housing and emotional and academic support to over 165 at-risk teens since its inception in 2003.
Rockstar Socials and Life Skill Workshops: RFCBC offers quarterly life skills events for young people to learn some of the necessary skills to be independent and successful participants in our community – i.e. financial literacy, meal prep and cooking, professional trainings, healthy habits, etc. In addition to life skills programming, RFCBC has identified a great need for community building events and healing. Rockstar Socials are events for the young people to come together for a community-based event to build relationships and socialize in a fun, safe space.
