Healing Through Vulnerability

A scary word for many, vulnerability is key to building relationships. Not only does sharing the tough moments in our lives with others help to build bonds of trust, it also reframes our own internal fears and anxieties, and therefore strengthens our relationship with self. Often, a fear of being vulnerable stems from anxieties about feeling out of control, fear of being invalidated or being seen as weak. But the reality is that vulnerability is where love, courage, and joy begin. Being open to the full range of human emotions, rather than trying to control what is “allowed” to get through – to ourselves or to others – is how we open up to releasing fear and living a more authentic life.
Interested in practicing vulnerability? Begin with this baby step: Pay extra attention to how you are feeling today, and make note when you might try and brush those feelings aside. Even the simple exercise of observing your relationship to your emotions is a great way to become more in tune with yourself.
